Sub-Ohm Vaping vs. Salt Nic: What’s the Difference?

“What’s the difference between sub-ohm vs salt nic?” is a common question we get here at AVS. So, let’s break them down.

What is sub-ohm vaping?

Sub-ohm means the coil resistance is under 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance, more power, bigger clouds, stronger flavor. It’s the direct-to-lung (DTL) setup cloud-chasers use, and it runs on high-VG juice, usually 70/30 VG to PG, at higher wattage than your average pod system.
For DTL vaping, juice strength typically ranges anywhere between 0 to 12mg, with 3 and 6mg being the most common.

What is salt nic?

Salt nic is nicotine salt e-liquid, built for low-power pod and MTL (mouth-to-lung) devices. It hits smoother at higher nicotine concentrations, which is why it’s the go-to for people switching from cigarettes, you get a real nicotine hit without your throat fighting you on it.
For MTL vaping, juice strength usually ranges anywhere between 20mg to 50mg.

Can I use nic salts in a sub-ohm device?

High nicotine salt nic juice and sub-ohm vape mods aren’t friends. Sub-ohm vaping produces high concentrations of vapor, which also means high concentrations of nicotine – this can lead to feeling dizzy, nauseous, and killer headaches aka the good ol “nic sick”. High levels of nicotine should always be vaped at lower temperatures.

What about the 0.6 – 0.8 ohm pods that exist for salt nic? Isn’t that sub-ohm vaping?

Technically, yes, anything under 1.0 ohm is sub-ohm by the numbers. But “sub-ohm vaping” as a category usually means the whole package: low resistance, high wattage, high-VG juice, big DTL clouds, the mod-and-tank setup. A Vaporesso XROS, SMOK Novo, or Uwell Caliburn running a 0.8 ohm pod at 12-16 watts isn’t that. It’s still a low-power MTL device, just with a slightly looser draw than the 1.0-1.2 ohm alternative.
The 0.6 ohm pods on those same devices lean more toward freebase juice or lower-strength salt nic. Once you get down to 0.8 and especially 0.6, you may want to consider going down to the lower end of the salt nic spectrum since the lower resistance means more vapor and more nicotine per puff (even at low wattage).

Bottom line

Sub-ohm: big clouds, low nicotine, more hands-on and worth learning the setup for. Salt nic: smooth hit, higher nicotine, built for simple pod devices. Not better or worse, just different tools built for different things.
