South 1st runs long, and our South First location sits at the far south end of it. Most ‘things to do’ lists focus on the north stretch near Bouldin Creek, so here’s what’s actually close to us, plus what’s worth the extra walk
Casa Maria (4327 S 1st) is basically across the street. Homemade tortillas, chile relleno, solid enchiladas, and a panadería next door with fresh pan dulce and empanadas. Live mariachi on Fridays if you’re around for it.
St. Elmo Brewing Company (440 E St Elmo Rd) is a couple minutes away. Good beer, dog-friendly patio, live music some nights, and a food truck parked out front slinging a smashburger people genuinely rave about. The Carl Kolsch is the one to try if you don’t know where to start.
Elizabeth St. Cafe. French-Vietnamese, get the banh mi. Croissants are legit too.
Polvos. Tex-Mex, big patio, order the queso. The salsa bar’s a nice touch too.
Bouldin Creek Cafe. Vegetarian/vegan, the veggie burger’s the move, blueberry cornbread too. Coffee’s strong, staff are genuinely friendly.
Once Over Coffee Bar. Good coffee, better patio, sits right on Bouldin Creek. Great spot to work or just sit.
Art For The People. Local Austin art gallery, prints and jewelry and home decor from local artists. Worth a slow browse.
Bloomers and Frocks. Vintage women’s clothing, 1900s through the 1980s. Everything’s cleaned and ready to wear.
Esby Apparel. Austin-based clothing label, made in the USA. Simple, well-made pieces, nothing flashy.
Roadhouse Relics. Todd Sanders’ neon art. This is also where you’ll find the “Greetings from Austin” mural, so bring your camera.
